Tattoo healing stages: what is normal and when to worry

A tattoo is a wound, and it heals in stages. Knowing what each stage looks like helps you tell normal healing from a problem.

Last checked 2026-10-14. General information, not medical advice.

The stages

  1. Days 1–3Wound phase: red, tender, may weep.
  2. Days 4–14Itching, flaking and peeling.
  3. Weeks 2–4The surface closes. It can look dull or cloudy.
  4. Months 1–3Deeper layers settle; lines and colours show their final look.

See your artist or a doctor if…

  • the redness spreads or gets stronger after the first days
  • it swells a lot, feels very hot, hurts more every day or oozes yellow or green pus
  • you get a fever or chills
  • you get a rash, hives or blisters that look like an allergic reaction
  • it has not clearly improved after two weeks

This is general information, not medical advice. If you are unsure, ask.

Questions and answers

How long does it take to heal?

The surface heals in about two to four weeks. Deeper layers need two to three months to settle and for the tattoo to show its final look.

Why does my tattoo look dull or cloudy?

A thin layer of new skin covers the ink while it heals, so it looks milky for a few weeks. It clears up as the skin renews.

Do I need a touch-up (“Nachstechen”)?

Often a little one, yes. Places that move or rub (hands, feet, fingers, joints), fine lines and white ink are the usual candidates. Wait until it is fully healed — six to eight weeks at least — and ask your studio about their touch-up policy.

Why do tattoos fade, and how do I prevent it?

Sun, friction and ageing break ink down slowly. The best protection is sunscreen on healed tattoos, moisturising and not scrubbing them. Black and grey holds longest, light colours and white fade fastest.

What is a “blowout”?

Ink spreading under the skin and making lines look blurry. It happens when the needle goes too deep, often in thin-skinned places. It is hard to fix, so choose an experienced artist.

Why is my healed tattoo raised or itchy months later?

Mild raised areas can be scar tissue or an irritation, sometimes an allergy to a pigment (red is the usual one). If it does not settle, show it to your artist and a doctor.
